This completely screws up my astronomy lessons for the year.

You can sign up for news about space (see the link below). This is very strange. Suddenly, Pluto isn’t a planet? We only have eight?

*sigh*

Just last Spring, we made a mural-sized poster of the Solar System, and now Pluto doesn’t really count. Phooey.

Stephen Colbert has talked about this.

So now what? Will the International Astronomical Union’s General Assembly in Prague be on notice or something? I think Big Girl might want to do that. (Not that she watches the Colbert Report or anything.)

Anyway, the message I got from SpaceWeather.com is below.

Subject: Pluto Declared a Dwarf Planet

Space Weather News for August 24, 2006

Today, astronomers at the International Astronomical Union’s General Assembly in Prague decided that the Solar System has eight planets, and Pluto is not one of them. Pluto has been declared a “dwarf planet.” Joining Pluto in the dwarf planet category are giant asteroid Ceres and Pluto’s cousin 2003 UB313. Get the full story at http://spaceweather.com/ .
